Here comes the bride...
It seems as though with the end of May/beginning of June comes the onslaught of wedding season. Many of my friends have entered that phase where they are pairing off and getting married and although Becca might disagree with me, I would rather be in this stage than the stage where all my friends are having children or, say, dying. So far, 2007 hasn't been much different than 2004 (4 weddings) or 2005 (one... maybe two), although I managed to avoid weddings in 2006 (that I can think of...). Memorial Day weekend kicked off what will no doubt be quite the season. My friend Tim, whom I have known since I was in eighth grade, had a beautiful commitment ceremony with his partner, Eric, in Carlsbad. Since Tim was close to my nieces and sister-in-law, Shanna, so, along with Chris, we packed up for the weekend and made the trek to south. On Memorial Day weekend. It took almost three hours to get there from LA. Seriously.
Anyway, once we got there and checked into our hotel rooms, it went pretty smoothly. The ceremony was beautiful (very short), and the reception had a well-stocked cash bar. The food, the music, everything was wonderful. The only bad thing was I danced barefoot too much and I got terrible blisters. Otherwise, it was a fabulous start to wedding season.
This past Saturday was the second wedding that Chris and I attended. After our great experience at Tim's wedding, I was stoked. Another free meal and great party, I thought. I had forgotten that not all weddings, particularly the receptions, could be as good as Tim's. The ceremony was lovely and the reception, for the most part, was all right. The food was fine, the reception hall was very beautiful, and the company was great. Then, the MC took the stage. Every word out of his mouth was an homage to this guy. As the bridal party entered the hall, he played the Rocky theme and as the couple cut the cake, he played the Mission Impossible theme song. But, not before egging the groom to smoosh cake in the bride's face and then mocking him when he took the high road. As if this wasn't bad enough, and I really thought it couldn't get any worse, he made the entire crowd gather around the bride and groom in a circle and put our arms around each other as he sang along to Green Day's "Good Riddance." Mercifully, the night ended shortly after that.
The next wedding on the horizon is Paul and Christina's. It should be a fun occasion, being a Burzlaff affair and all. Tonight, Christina asked me to be one of her bridesmaids, an offer I of course accepted. It is such an honor to be asked, but if the MC starts to sing along to "Sexy Back," I am outta there. Sorry Christina.
