Dancing the Night Away

Last night was the most fun I have had in quite a while. Natlie (co-RA henceforth referred to as Nat), our friend Cate and I all went to LindyGroove in Pasadena to go swing dancing (this is a picture of us taken right before we left. It's not the greatest, but you get the idea. Cate is on the right and Nat is on the left). Natalie (from Bako henceforth referred to as Natalie) met us there and it was amazing.

We started the evening by having dinner at Sharky's, a health food Mexican place kind of like Baja Fresh. It was very good :-). Then, we headed over to the Masonic Temple where LindyGroove takes place, but unfortunately we were too early. To pass the time, Nat suggests we walk over to the Sheraton and have a drink. So, we did. Let me tell you, hotel bars are a great place for people watching. There was a woman at the bar who was obviously there to pick up men. She had (what appeared to be) brand spanking new breasts and was wearing the lowest cut shirt and glared at the three of us from the moment we walked in. People like that crack me up. Really, are we really a threat to you and your scary boobs? No.

Anyway, so we headed back to LG for our lesson (as Nat and Cate had never danced before). When we got to the partnering up part of the dance, my partner turns to me and says, "How ironic that we would be paired together. How are you, Jessica?" Of course, this freaks me out! How does the guy know my name? Turns out, his name is Anthony and when I was senior in high school and he was a freshman, I had directed him in Guys and Dolls at BHS. Crazy. He looked so much more grown up that I hadn't even recognized him. Small world.

Finally, the free dancing started. At first, no one was asking us to dance. That is, no one except Zeke. Zeke was an older gentleman (had to be pushing 80 at least) who was built something like a hobbit. He took quite a shine to Nat and kept asking her to dance. The whole night. At first, he was this cute old man who was a pretty good dancer and kinda... Different. By the end of the night, he had told her they were "sexy" dancing, asked if she was 16 (which just makes him that much creepier), kissed her neck, and cupped her ass (her words, not mine). By the way, his name was not actually Zeke. That's just what we dubbed him. Some guys are so nasty. There was one other creepy guy, we called him blue flame shirt guy, who also kissed Nat on the cheek and put his head on her boobs. Unfortunately, I danced with him as well, and he definitely doesn't have any concept of personal space, that's for sure. The rest of the guys there were fine, though.

Finally, Natalie showed up (after CSI) at about 10:15. Of course, right away she was out there tearing up the dance floor. During a rare break, we spotted two girls who looks eerily familiar. Finally we realized the two girls were Lauren Shenkman and Andrea (don't know her last name) from high school. Lauren looks totally different. Not that she wasn't beautiful before, but she is absolutely gorgeous now! So we chatted for a while. I was so stunned to have run into THREE people from BHS accidentally (Natalie doesn't count because I invited her) that I wasn't very eloquent while talking to Lauren or Andrea. What a small, small, small, small world.

So, yes, much fun was had at the LindyGroove last night. Nat and Cate want to go back next week, which is fine with me. It's a great source of exercise, and a great self-esteem booster as well! Plus, you can't find anywhere with better people watching (except maybe a hotel bar).

I'm off to a meeting. Hope you all are having a happy Friday! Later Gators!

Back to Middle School

Last night, I had this really long post all typed out, then I clicked something and it disappeared. I was not happy. But oh well. Most of it was about thesis and was probably boring anyway. To clarify what I am doing for my thesis: I am looking at adoption narratives through ethics. That's the best I can do to explain it right now.

In other news, Kira and I went to the Middle School Dance Party at Pomona. It wasn't like any middle school dance I ever went to. Well, I went to junior high, not middle school. Maybe that's why. Or maybe because there was beer. There was never any beer at my junior high dances. Anyway, it was fun. I found a very cute boy for a friend to talk to, and I was proud of myself. I had no idea who he was, but she thought he was cute, so I just went up to him and said, "Weren't you in my accounting class at Scripps?" I have never taken accounting a day in my life. He, of course, just kept talking to me, then I introduced my friend and I was off. Easy as that. Now, why I can't I do that for myself? Eh, oh well.

Funniest thing I have heard outside my window: "Horses have legs, so theoretically, they can wear pants." Seriously, someone just said that outside. I love my school.

Well, I am off to the village to read and eat. Yay. Sorry this post was not very well written. I have used up all my talent on less important things, like homework. Have a great day!

HTMLing

Okay, I figured out some HTML and am currently working on making this look more interesting. Thanks for those of you who commented and tried to help me.

Nothing much going on right now. I'm at work and everyone else is in a staff meeting, so I am sitting at my desk (the intern desk) trying to entertain myself. Woo hoo. I have to present at a Budget hearing in about an hour and try to wrestle $500 from Pomona. Nic, Courtney and I, as one of our RA programs, are trying to bring Alix Olson to Scripps for a performance. For those of you not "in the know," Alix is a spoken word performace artist/activist. She seems cool. We have to raise $4800 to bring her to Scripps, which is proving to be quite a feat. We're going to do it, though! I will keep you all updated.

My First Post

Natalie, I just want you to know that I created this for the soul purpose of commenting on your blog! I hope you appreciate my comment! :-)

It has been a long time since I have posted on a blog, and seeing as how I have no time, I probably won't update this one very often. But, I am a big fan of stalking people via their blogs, so it is only fair that I give back. I warn you now that there will be no dishy gossip and most of my posts will have to do with a) thesis, b) RA stuff, or c) thesis.

Ha, as I am sitting her writing this I hear yelling and cheering coming from my window and I look out and see a massive group of people congrugating on the quad outside my dorm. I'm talking over 100 people. So, I immediately race over to my neighbors room (who has a balcony facing the quad) to investigate. We ask a passing guy what is going on and he replies, "Smoke Forrest." What is "Smoke Forrest?" you may be asking yourselves. Well, I had thought it was merely legend. Apparently, every Wednesday night at midnight, students from all 5 campuses gather and an arbitrarily decided location and smoke copious amount of pot. Tonight, they chose the Jaqua Quadrangle at Scripps. My friends and I watched as Campus Safety drove up and the massive group of people took off running in all directions. Hilarious. As I walked down the hall to the bathroom, the hall reeked of Nag Chamba (the incense preferred by potheads) and pot. Ah, college. Gotta love it.

As far as thesis goes (because that's what you all really want to know about), I finished my annotated bibliography for seminar tomorrow (hooray!). As far as RA goes, Nat and I hosted our first community building program tonight and it was a hit, if I do say so myself. We asked everyone who wanted to participate to open their doors at 9:30 and then we came around with cookies, tea, and hot chocolate and got to know some of our residents. I was pleasantly surprised by the number of residents who had their doors open. It was great.

That's it for tonight. More later!
